Why Layne won 7 world titles and why one of them was done out of love

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 January, 2018 - Presented by Matt Barr, the Looking Sideways Action Sports podcast turns its attention to 7-time world champ and cultural phenomenon Layne Beachley. In the podcast Barr talks to Beachley about the lessons she learned during one of the greatest competitive surfing careers.

"As I discovered when I visited her at her Queenscliff home in December 2017, she's a funny, insightful and generous presence," said Barr. "She's keen to share her experiences from an incredible career as candidly as possible."

Layne: Five Things We Learned

1. She redefined the phrase 'fiercely competitive'.
"My requirements for competitive greatness? Be fiercely driven. Hate your competition. Work harder than everybody else."

2. It can be lonely at the top
Pushing yourself so hard and for so long can have emotional consequences. "During the years I won those first six world titles, there was no consistency of joy. I depleted all of that by the expectations I put upon myself".

3. There's a difference between hard work and working hard
“Are you working hard to prove a point? Or are you investing in hard work because of the intrinsic motivation to establish the outcome that you’re looking for?” For Layne, understanding this distinction was a career-long process that led to her seventh and most emotionally enjoyable world title triumph.

4. Everybody wants to belong
"What drove that ferocity was my desire to prove to the world that I was deserving of love and belonging. That's what we're all looking for as human beings."

5. Women had it tougher
Out of the water, Layne and her peers battled sexism and misogyny every day. "It was a constant fight. I’m proud of how it's changed. I didn't want to have to go through all that shit and it be for nothing".
