Best Day of the Year: The 2016 Royal Barrique runs after extended waiting period

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 December, 2016 - A full three months after the first false-start, the 2016 Royal Barrique went off in the famed banks of Hossegor with big, heaving tubes.

At the first surf check there was nothing to suggest that there could be tubes at La Gravière big enough to meet contest standards. However, overnight there was a total transformation and the judging panel of the Royal Barrique saw that as soon as the fog dispersed the day had potential. At 11.30, the event was called on.

Nelson Cloarec (winner in 2013) and Marc Lacomare (who had just returned from a very productive month in Hawaii) went straight to the water.

During the three hours of competition, 19 of the 50 invited surfers found themselves incredibly, insanely barrelled.

The event was one of the "biggest" Royal Barrique in the history of the competition,  but it missed the proper amount of sun necessary for quality photos. World Tour rookie Joan Duru arrived home from Hawaii the night before and was greeted with a surprise party. Duru and much of the local crew missed the event because the celebration went on long and strong.
