Durban to host 2005 Quiksilver South African Surfing Championships

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 April, 2005 : - - The country's premier surfing event, the 2005 Quiksilver South African Surfing Championships,  will take place at New Pier Beach, Durban from 5 - 8 May.
This Surfing South Africa-sanctioned event, which is in its 41st edition, rotates between the eight provincial bodies, so each province holds the event every eighth year.  However, because Durban produces more than 75% of South Africa's top surfers, it has been decided to host the championships in Durban every 5 or 6 years.  The event was last held in 'surf city' in 1999 and took place in Jeffrey's Bay last year.
128 of the country's best male and female surfers will battle it out for the coveted 'Presidents Cup', which is currently held by KwaZulu Natal.
Quiksilver Team and Events Manager, Mr Dane Patterson, commented; "This event has proven to be a breeding ground for emerging talented surfers and all of South Africa's former world champions. Together with invaluable input from Surfing South Africa and the respective provinces, focus is now on the transformation of the sport.  The transformation is very pleasing and is evident in the mix of cultures of each provincial team."
Ms Sharon Peetz, manager of Durban Africa, commented; "We are delighted that the 2005 Quiksilver South African Surfing Championships are back with us as the event will assist us in our efforts to market Durban as the surf city and playground of  South Africa."
