Wahu Surfer Groms Comp

Surfing Western Australia
Trigg Point, Western Australia
28 - 29 January, 2017

90 competitors have signed up to compete in the two-day event

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 25 January, 2017 - Surfing stars of the future will be on show this weekend with the final event of the Wahu Surfer Groms Comps presented by Woolworths set to go off at Trigg Point in Western Australia.

After events in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, and South Australia over summer, 90 competitors have signed up to compete in the two-day event which will see some of WA's most promising young surfers competing for an awesome array of prizes, both in and out of the water.

Regarded as one of the major stepping stones in the development of young Australian surfers, the Wahu Surfer Groms Comps is the only event series to specially cater for the increasing stocks of Australian 'micro-groms', who are set to compete in Under-8, Under-10, Under-12 and Under-14 divisions.

The blue ribbon Under-14 boys and girls divisions will battle for the chance to attend an all-expenses paid, three-day Wahu Surf Camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High-Performance Centre (HPC).

Headlining an impressive group of young surfers competing this weekend is Ry Dempsey (Margaret River), Danny Benedetti (Margaret River), Reilly Smith (Yallingup), Dexter Payenberg (Palmyra), Maddie Cawood (Margaret River) and Coral Durant (Red Bluff), who all have their eyes on the opportunity to visit the HPC.

Great summer surf conditions are forecast this weekend with Perth's premiere wave location Trigg Point set to be overrun by frothing grommets and their families.

“The Wahu Surfer Groms Comps are always super exciting for the kids,” said Surfing WA high performance coach Mark Clift. “Whether it's a grom throwing on a coloured rash vest for the very first time, or those chasing the trip to the HPC, the event always provides a great mix of talent and participation"

Each entrant will also receive a Wahu Surfer Groms Comps presented by Woolworths t-shirt for entering, plus a Wahu beach product and there will be plenty of beach games and giveaways at each event.

Adding to the high stakes is the Woolworths Fresh Wave Awards, presented to the best and fairest male and female surfers from each event. The recipients will have a high degree of sportsmanship and exhibit future surfing potential and will be awarded a $250 Woolworths voucher each.

The Wahu Surfer Groms Comps presented by Woolworths have helped to launch the careers of many of Australia's most promising junior surfers with more than 800 children set to take part in the 2016/17 event series.

Previous champions include Matt Banting, Jacob Willcox, Luke Hynd, Eli Steele, Kai Hing, Chris Zaffis, Quinn Bruce, Ellie-Jean Coffey, Macy Callaghan, Isabella Nichols, Holly Wawn and Laura Poncini.
