ISA News

Beginning of the year sees 300 new coaches in 20 countries across five continents

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 25 April, 2017 - The International Surfing Association has been busy this year. Hot on the heels of bringing surfing to the Olympics the international group headed by Fernando Aguerre has hosted water safety courses, judging camps and surf instructor projects. Below is a wrap of Quarter 1 from the ISA…

2017 has gotten off to a great start with over 300 new coaches in 20 countries across all five continents participating in ISA courses in just in the first quarter of the year.

We also launched a key strategic partnership with the International Lifesaving Federation (ILS) for a global standard water safety course that has been an excellent complement to our existing coaching courses and contributed to a safer environment to practice the sport.

The ISA Educational Programs are an integral part of the growth and development of the sport and we are excited to see significant progress being made both in traditional and non-traditional surfing and SUP markets. Our development efforts and expansion truly highlight the global reach of the sport we love.

If you are interested in organizing or participating in an ISA Course and joining the ISA's development efforts please contact the ISA Membership and Development Department or take a look at the ISA Course Schedule.

ISA/ILS Water Safety Course:
Earlier this year the International Surfing Association (ISA) announced a key strategic partnership agreement with the International Lifesaving Federation (ILS) to establish a global standard water safety course for Surf and SUP instructors and promote water safety worldwide.

In February and March the first ISA / ILS International Surf and SUP Instructor Aquatic Rescue and Safety Courses were held in both Sri Lanka and the Maldives.  These courses were very well accepted by the local instructors who found them challenging and informative. All of the instructors felt that the course gave them sound knowledge of the skills needed to operate effectively in water safety during their surf lessons. Link here

From March 13-17, 2017 the Scottish Surfing Federation hosted an ISA Surf Level 2 and an ISA Surf Level 1 Coaching Course in Thurso, Scotland.

Ten coaches gathered from across all regions of Scotland for an action packed and high performance ISA Surf Level 2 Coaching Course. These coaches were guided in many key aspects of developmental surf coaching by ISA Course Presenter Andy Joyce. Included in this was generic athlete development, athlete training plans, surfing movement analysis, video analysis, and simulation training, which are all key elements of being a successful surf coach. View More Here

Twenty-one new Russian Judges took part in the ISA Judging Course and will now be accredited as ISA Level 1 trainee judges. The ISA Judging Course was presented by Alessandro Dini, a long-time ISA Course Presenter from Italy. Alessandro has traveled previously to Russia to work with the Russian Surfing Federation on surf development and help establish the ISA Coaching and Instructing Program.
