Rabbit, Mick, Parko and Steph drop in for surfing reserve
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 6 March, 2016 - On March 8th, on the eve of the Roxy/Quiksilver Pro, the Gold Coast from Burleigh to Snapper will receive official dedication as the eighth World Surfing Reserve by Save The Waves Coalition. A public ceremony will be held at Point Danger Park where Premier of Queensland Annastacia Palaszczuk will formally dedicate these 16 kilometres of Gold Coast beaches as the next World Surfing Reserve.
Wayne “Rabbit" Bartholomew will MC the event and also in attendance will be GC Mayor and members of the city council as well as WSL world champions Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson and Stephanie Gilmore. Save The Waves Coalition's Executive Director Nik Strong-Cvetich and International Surfing Association's President Fernando Aguerre will also be in attendance for the ceremony.
The Gold Coast joins a prestigious network of other World Surfing Reserves that includes Malibu, California; Ericeira, Portugal; Manly Beach, Australia; Santa Cruz, California; Huanchaco, Peru; Bahia de Todos Santos, Baja California, Mexico and Punta de Lobos, Chile. “From the beginning, it was clear that there was a tremendous amount of community support for the Gold Coast to become a World Surfing Reserve - an important selection criteria for the WSR governing body,” notes Nik Strong-Cvetich, Save The Waves Coalition's Executive Director.
"Through the strong community support, the Gold Coast WSR has already been named as the top advisory group to City Council on all coastal matters, which is an important role to safeguard Gold Coast’s coastal resources.” World Surfing Reserves, a program of California-based Save The Waves, proactively identifies, designates and preserves outstanding waves, surf zones and surrounding environments around the world.
The program serves as a global model for preserving wave breaks and their surrounding areas by recognizing and protecting the key environmental, cultural, economic and community attributes of surfing areas. This program has established and will support a Gold Coast World Surfing Reserve Local Stewardship Council to identify and solve issues throughout the designated area such as how to deal with overcrowding issues, determine the economic impact of surfing on the Gold Coast economy, and protect Gold Coast surfing resources from harmful policy decisions.
Gold Coast World Surfing Reserve Official Dedication Ceremony will be held March 8, 2016, 8:30am at the Gold Coast, Point Danger Park, Point Lookout Marine Pde, Coolangatta.
