Las Americas Pro Tenerife

Pauline Ado leads the charge into the semis in Tenerife

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 2 February, 2018 - The Las Americas Pro Tenerife, Stop No. 2 on the World Surf League European Qualifying Series, completed the all-important quarterfinals today in small conditions, setting up for an exciting finish when conditions improve again.

Ruben Vitoria (EUK) opened his quarterfinal with a bang, surfing one of the best waves of the afternoon to an 8.17. His opponent Jason Torres (CRI) on the other hand surfed average waves to a 11.50 total but that saw him take the lead as Vitoria struggled to find a back up score. It was only at the 3mn mark that the Basque managed to turn the heat and eventually move on to the semis.

“I was so nervous in that heat, I couldn’t believe I wouldn’t find a 3 after my first really good wave,” Vitoria said. “Luckily I got a little runner with two turns and got the score. I’m feeling really great about myself and my surfing this week, now it’s just fun! I won’t have any pressure going into the finals, just fun!”

Julen Egiguren (EUK) took out the second quarter, defeating the last Canarian surfer in the event Kalani Da Silva (CNY).

Gearoid McDaid (IRL) had a very similar start to Vitoria’s but watched and learned from the previous heat, going after another good score right away to put his fight against Lens Arancibia Avila (FRA) to bed early. The Irish surfer has been on a tear all week, finding similarities with a spot at home to cruise through the rounds and all the way into the finals for the first time on the Qualifying Series.

“It’s a pretty similar wave to one of the waves at home, a good little left point, only slightly warmer!” McDaid joked. “I love coming to the Canaries, this is my first time to Tenerife but I’ve had some great surf in Lanzarote and it looks like waves are super fun here too. I’m super excited about making it to finals day, hopefully we’ll get some fun waves.”

Jorgann Couzinet (FRA) took out an exciting final quarterfinal against Gony Zubizarreta (ESP) for his own spot in the semifinals.

In the women’s, Pauline Ado (FRA) took out the opening quarterfinal and put an end to local talent Daniela Quiros’ run in Tenerife. Maud Le Car (FRA) followed right in and defeated Leticia Canales Bilbao (EUK) in a low-scoring affair at high tide.

Tahitian ripper Marion Philippe (PYF) took out the third quarter to reach the semifinals of a QS event for the first time in her young career. The Papeete surfer looked right at home in the shallow lefts of Las Americas and committed to all her turns to take the precious ticket into the final four.

“I’ve never gone that far in a QS before so I feel amazing,” Philippe said. “I’m still studying so I’m not doing all the events I wish I could, but I’m very happy to be here. Waves are a bit tricky this week, and I’ve been trying to be more patient that I usually am, so far it looks like it paid off. Mikaela got me in the first round so it’ll be interesting to get another shot against her in the semis.”

In the final heat of the women’s event today, Mikaela Greene (AUS) dominated with a sharp backhand attack of the left to post the day’s highest combined heat total of 15 points. The Australian, fresh off an excellent 9th place in Florida, kept her momentum going in the Canary Islands and dispatched of the reigning European Champion Carol Henrique (PRT).

“I’m super happy to make the finals day, and especially finishing today with a good heat like that,” Greene said. “I tried to wait and select the best waves, there weren’t a lot today but somehow I found myself on two very fun ones so I’m happy about my choices. For my first visit to the Canaries I look forward to maybe having a little time off when the event is over and discovering the rest of the island which looks incredibly beautiful.”
