World Surf League Championship Tour Event
Margaret River, Western Australia
29 March - 9 April 2017

Increased swell & favorable winds anticipated in coming days

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 April, 2017 - The Drug Aware Margaret River Pro, Stop No. 2 of the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), will be called OFF today due to unfavorable winds, and as improved conditions are anticipated for tomorrow and Sunday.

"Unfortunately, a cold front passed through Margaret River yesterday and the winds have kept coming from an unfavorable direction overnight," said WSL Deputy Commissioner Jessi Miley-Dyer. "We were hoping to arrive to cleaner conditions this morning, but with what we are seeing, we will call competition off for the day. The forecast suggests more favorable winds and an increase in swell on the way, so we will come back tomorrow with the hope of getting competition underway."

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 6:45 a.m. local time to reassess the conditions and make the next call.

The field of elite surfers has been narrowed down to the men's Quarterfinalists and women's Semifinalists. When competition gets back underway, the event will see an exciting finals day in Margaret River at the second stop of the WSL Championship Tour.

Reigning WSL Champion Tyler Wright (AUS) will take on Sage Erickson (USA) for the opportunity to defend her event title in the opening Semifinal matchup.

Six-time WSL Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) will be up against 2017 World Title contender Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) in the second Semifinal heat, when competition resumes.

Surfline, official forecast for the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro, are calling for: The best surf of the remaining period looks likely on Sunday with good potential for strong swell and favorable wind.  Friday and Saturday will offer smaller, but still good size, SSW swell and favorable wind windows in the earlier mornings.
