Hurley Pro and Swatch Pro Trestles
Decreasing swell forces organizers, surfers and general viewing public to wait
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 September, 2017 - Lower Trestles, San Clemente, California - The Hurley Pro and Swatch Pro at Trestles has been called OFF for the day due to poor conditions on offer. “We are seeing a decrease in the swell size, as well as inconsistency in the lineup today,” said Jessi Miley-Dyer, WSL Deputy Commissioner. “There is not enough in the ocean to run heats, so we are calling the competition off for the day. We will come back tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. for the next call.”
Event officials will reconvene tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. PST to reassess the conditions and make the next call. When the Swatch Pro at Trestles resumes, it will be the first elimination Round 2 and an all-Hawaii affair as three-time WSL Champion Carissa Moore (HAW) will battle against Malia Manuel (HAW).
Also, 2016 WSL Champion, defending event winner, and current No. 1 Tyler Wright (AUS) will be against wildcard threat Macy Callaghan (AUS) in Round 2 Heat 3.
Six-time WSL Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) must overcome elimination against fellow Aussie Bronte Macaulay (AUS) if she’s to earn a second-career Trestles win. An all Brazilian affair will kick off the Hurley Pro at Trestles as 2015 WSL Champion Adriano de Souza (BRA) will battle Wiggolly Dantas (BRA) and Miguel Pupo (BRA) in Round 1 Heat 1.
Fresh off of his Billabong Tahiti Pro win, Julian Wilson (AUS) is pitted against a hefty Brazilian duo of Caio Ibelli (BRA) and Jadson Andre (BRA) in Round 1 Heat 2.
Round 1 Heat 5 features reigning WSL Champion John John Florence (HAW) against aerialist Italo Ferreira (BRA) and wildcard threat Hiroto Ohhara (JPN). Florence will look for a strong start at Lowers to help hold his ground at the No. 2 ranking.
Jeep Rankings Leader Jordy Smith (ZAF) is back to defend his Hurley Pro at Trestles victory and begins his campaign against 2017 rookie Ian Gouveia (BRA) and explosive wildcard Evan Geiselman (USA) in Round 1 Heat 6.
The last heat of Round 1 will witness three-time WSL Champion Mick Fanning (AUS) face off against fellow power surfers Michel Bourez (PYF) and Ezekiel Lau (HAW).
Surfline, official forecaster for the Hurley Pro at Trestles, are calling for: Fading and smaller/small SSW swell mix prevails Thur-Fri, as NW swell mix picks up some with peaky and broken up surf expected for Lowers. A small, new SSW swell will pulse in through the weekend as the NW swell mix fades. Next week looks better as back-to-back S swells move in Monday through Thursday, with Wed-Thur likely enjoying the largest waves of the waiting period.
