Tom Carroll, Nathan Hedge and Phil McDonald help Soldier On Surf Therapy participants
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 13 October, 2016 - Coolangatta - The Soldier On Surf Therapy Program launched into the first of four Surf Camps and Learn To Surf Programs last Saturday and Sunday the 8th and 9th of October as part of the partnership between Surfing Australia and Soldier On.
One group of eight intermediate surfers spent the weekend with coaching staff at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre (HPC), learning new techniques with a view to improving their overall surfing.
The second group of eight beginners also started their Learn To Surf program on the Saturday at Currumbin. There were many highlights from the weekend according to Surfing Australia General Manager Sport Development And High Performance, Chris Symington.
“Surfing Australia couldn’t be prouder of this program as it stays true to our purpose of creating a healthier and happier Australia through surfing. We know the positive impact surfing can have on people’s lives so we are committed to sharing the stoke with these amazing individuals. The programs that were conducted this weekend are just the beginning and we are really looking forward to working with Soldier On to grow this initiative into the future.”
The official partnership aims to see veterans benefit from a unique surfing and rehabilitation experience through the Soldier On Surf Therapy Program.
Created off the back of a successful Soldier On Surf Day earlier this year, the program will have two separate components - a series of intermediate surf camps at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre (HPC) at Casuarina in Northern NSW, and a program of learn to surf lessons facilitated by Surfing Australia affiliated Surf Schools.
Physical exercise and sports recovery have been proven to improve mental health and has been demonstrated with great success for veterans who participate in surf therapy programs in the USA.
The annual Soldier On Surfing Therapy program supported by nudie will include:
4 x HPC Surf Camps (8 veteran surfers per camp)
• Each camp will be a 2 day surf camp for intermediate surfers with all the extras – skate, gymnastics, float tank, coaching, meals & accommodation
4 x Learn to Surf programs (8 veterans per program) for 4 weeks each
• Run by Surfing Australia Surf Schools
