How does water flow off of a rail? Computer program takes a closer look
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 6 February, 2017 - CFD, computational fluid dynamics, is often used by sportscar makers and other high-end gear producers to test the way air and water flow around an object. Firewire recently put a few of their surfboards under the CFD program to see what would happen.
Chris Grow of Firewire’s Tech Talk program teamed up with an Italian Surfer/Scientist who helped bring visual clues to a previously unseen world of how surfboards interact with wind and water.
They discovered a few things including what water looks like as it wraps around a soft rail vs. a hard rail and how small changes to tail rocker can affect the way a surfboard's nose works.
