WindanSea Surf Club holds annual reunion at Currumbin

Surf Culture

WindanSea recognized as the first truly international surf club in the world

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 17 January, 2017 - Get ready for one of the biggest legendary Boardriding Club reunions ever in the New Year celebrating the WindanSea Surf Club at Currumbin RSL on Thursday 2nd March, 2017.

Established in 1962 at San Diego, California with the name taken from the local reefbreak, Windansea. Considered to be the greatest Club in its day, membership was invitational and the bar was set high for the talent level.

WindanSea was the first truly International Club in the World with branches formed in Mexico, Tahiti, New Zealand, South Africa and Australia.

In 1963, three Bondi Surfers, Max Bowman, Dennis Lindsay and Dave Spencer travelled to California for a surfing trip to Mexico. The American WindanSea asked the Bondi Boys to start an Australian branch and when they returned to Bondi, Max Bowman was elected President in 1964. Like the Pied Piper, Max recruited some of Australia’ best surfers from Bondi, Cronulla, Wollongong, South Coast, Avalon, Central Coast, Gold Coast to Noosa.

Gold Coast asserted control from 1970 with a clubhouse in Surfers Paradise behind Paula Stafford’s bikini shop in Cavill Avenue where Melba’s nightclub stands today.

By the mid-seventies the greatest Club in the World had faded out, that is apart from the original base at San Diego and the sole surviving Australian Club at Caloundra that continues to grow in strength with an abundance of talent.

So when former Junior Pres of Bondi WindanSea Rick Teodo called me for my reaction to a one-off, never to be repeated reunion, I overwhelming agreed, saying, “Let’s do it!"

The WindanSea 2017 Reunion will take place on Thursday 2nd March from 6.30pm in the upstairs Sound Lounge of the Currumbin RSL. It will be $25.00 admission that entitles everyone to one free Balter beer or Barefoot wine and finger food. An extra $25.00 will be charged for T-shirt and badge. For Booking tickets online click on the Facebook site Windansea Reunion and register via on Eventbrite link. Tickets will be sold on the night but better to get in early.

Awards & Certificates will be handed out to original members with speeches, memorabilia exhibition, classic surf movies & history slideshow plus live music from Gringo’s Band “Los Gringos” guaranteed to entertain and raise a barrel of laughs!

The public are more than welcome to attend the nights Festivities with the theme of celebrating the “Brotherhood of Surfing.” It will be one of the most significant surfing reunions held and many of the super legends have agreed to attend. A Bob McTavish replica board of the famous 1967 Fantastic Plastic Machine that spurned the shortboard revolution and Gary Birdsall painting of the Evolution of Windansea will be auctioned to offset costs and raise money for charity.

A follow-up beach party bbq and surf morning session will be held on Friday 3rd March at Laceys Lane, Palm Beach Parklands on the northern side of Currumbin Creek on the Palm Beach side from 8am until midday.
