Stephanie Gilmore will also come on board as a Woolworths Ambassador

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 September, 2016 - Woolworths and Surfing Australia have joined forces in a partnership that will ensure the sustainability of some of the country’s key surfing events.

Programs including the Wahu Surfer Groms Comps presented by Woolworths, the Weet-Bix SurfGroms program and the Surf for Life Project are at the cornerstone of the deal, which aims to promote a healthier and happier Australia through the sport of surfing.

“We are proud to be partnering with such an iconic sport through the events that will help nurture our next world champions,” said Andrew Hicks, Director of Marketing, Woolworths Supermarkets.

“Surfing is at the heart of Australian culture and our involvement in the sport is a further showcase of our commitment to encourage healthy eating habits amongst young Australians,” Andrew Hicks added.

The Wahu Surfer Groms Comps presented by Woolworths has helped to launch the careers of many of Australia's most promising junior surfers with more than 800 children set to take part in the 2016/17 event series.

A Woolworths ‘Free fruit for kids’ zone will be activated across the nine round series along with the Woolworths Wave Warrior award – presented to the ‘best and fairest’ male and female surfer at each event.

Six times World Surf League (WSL) World Champion Stephanie Gilmore will also come on board as a Woolworths Ambassador.

“The partnership with Woolworths will not only provide invaluable support to Australia’s next generation of surfing talent but help educate the community on how the sport fosters a healthy lifestyle," said Stephanie Gilmore.

“I’m excited to see how our surfing talent develops over the summer through this partnership and look forward to watching first hand these surfers ride the waves to future success,” added Stephanie Gilmore.

Woolworths also becomes a supporting sponsor to the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre (HPC) and the Woolworths ‘Free fruit for kids’ zone will be activated at the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle 2017 National Final.

“We are genuinely excited to be partnering with Woolworths and with their valued support we will be delivering on our organisational purpose to create healthier and happier Australian’s through surfing,” said Surfing Australia CEO Andrew Stark.

“This is a true beach to broadcast partnership that will ensure that Surfing Australia continues to service the grass roots of the sport through quality sport development programs. We sincerely thank Woolworths for their commitment to this exciting new partnership and look forward to a long relationship with them into the future and towards the Olympic Games in Japan 2020.”

Additionally, the partnership will see Surfing Australia produce a variety of digital content for Woolworths that will be published across Surfing Australia’s digital and broadcast platforms including the mySURF.tv platform and Surfing Australia TV on GO! Stephanie Gilmore will feature in the Woolworths branded digital content series.

The first event of the Wahu Surfer Groms Comps presented by Woolworths commences at Coffs Harbour this weekend.
